SCHOOL PROFILE

Speech from Principal 2009-2010

18-11-2009

因此,西諺有言,「 Hope for the best, prepare for the worst 」,也是有其道理的。

常常記著:「 Hope for the best, prepare for the worst 。」

My Sharing on Trial Scheme on Drug Testing

3 rd November 2009

Good morning Fr. Fung, teachers and students,

As you all know that, the Trail Scheme on Drug Testing will be introduced in the schools of Tai Po District very soon. This has become a hot issue and I have been frequently asked by my friends and relatives who are not in the education sector. I usually respond by asking them the following questions: What are the purposes of running the scheme? Will it be effective? When the students are identified as drug abusers, what can we do to help them get rid of drugs? Will there be any extra resources to help schools take up such additional jobs? Are there any other alternatives which are more cost-effective than drug testing on the campus?

The reason for running this Trial Scheme, according to the press release of the Education Bureau & Narcotics Division, Security Bureau, is the seriousness of the school drug abuse problem, and its impacts on schools and society.

The purposes of the Scheme, as they have mentioned, are for the prevention and rendering assistance to students. For Prevention, they believe that such scheme will alert those students who have not taken any drugs to continue to stay away from drugs. They will be in a better position to say 「no」 to their peers when they are tempted to try drugs. This will help prevent the spread of drug consumption in schools. For rendering assistance to students, they believe that the Scheme will trigger those students who are abusing drugs to quit drugs and seek help, especially those who are trying drugs at an early stage. The Scheme will also provide appropriate support services to those students who wish to pull themselves out of the drug trap. In fact, there are four Guiding Principles of the Scheme:1. Helping students in their best interest; 2. Voluntary participation; 3. Keeping personal information strictly confidential; 4. Provide professional testing and support services for students.

Compared with the first draft of the plan, the government has listened to the voices of different stakeholders and has revised the Scheme in the aspects of the testing procedures, the protection of students』 privacy etc.

As the scheme is quite positive and is able to help students refuse drugs, why is the Hong Kong Catholic Church still strongly against the proposal of drug testing in schools?

The Editorial of Sunday Examiner published on 9 th September 2009 emphasized that 「Drug Abuse Testing scheme undermines trust while failing to address root causes」. Why does the newspaper say so?

First, one of the major hallmarks of a democratic society, as stated by the editor of the Sunday Examiner, is that authorities arrest the suspects rather than resort to random checks of members of the community as a precautionary measure. When a teenaged student commits a crime, they should be treated as juvenile offenders. Now, however, students who are identified as drug abusers will not be charged. This implies that juvenile smoking should be viewed less seriously than it is. So, will teenagers who are no longer in school receive the same treatment? Will schools which do not participate in the Drug Testing Scheme have the right to punish those who have been tested positive for drugs? Has Hong Kong entered into an era of one law, two systems? The entire scheme fails to set out standardised criteria that delineate right and wrong, reward and punishment.

Second, it is said to be a 「compulsory-voluntary」 scheme, which students can choose not to participate in. However, refusing to take part in the scheme may lead to suspicion and those students might be subjected to be investigated. Hence, the policy conveys a message of false democracy and freedom, but with fear and suspicion. It fails to encourage trust and collaboration among parents, schools, police and students. This will result in each party seeking to shirk its responsibilities, hence causing more troubles for schools and parents.

Third, the editor advises the school principals to think twice about supporting the Drug Testing Scheme. The responsibility of nurturing the character of young people and their behaviour falls firstly to parents and then schools, not the government. If schools want government intervention, why don』t they request for police officers to be assigned as the disciplinary masters in schools? Surely, schools do not merely disseminate knowledge, but also nurture the whole-person development of the students.

Fourth, instead of investing resources in a scheme that is not comprehensive, the editor suggests that we should strengthen the voluntary and charity organisations within and outside schools. It is believed that such measures will be more beneficial to students.

In fact, besides the government intervention, we believe trusted teachers can encourage students to seek rehabilitation. The young people who take drugs usually have poor relationships with their parents and suffer low self-esteem. They are more vulnerable to peer pressure and lack meaningful goals in life. As caring educators, teachers can help by referring students to external counselling and drug rehabilitation organisations. But unfortunately, the ongoing educational reform has left little space and time for the teachers to fulfill their roles to the fullest extent.

Dear boys, we believe that although drug addiction is not an issue of our school, we will try to react in the following ways: 1. adopt preventive programmes; 2. enhance the caring culture of the school; 3. provide more opportunities for successful experiences to enhance the self-esteem of students; 4. help students clarify their goals of life; 5. pay attention to the students at risk and provide necessary guidance and follow up work. We firmly believe that providing care and positive reinforcement for our students are more effective than supporting the Drug Testing Scheme.

That』s all I want to share with you today. Thank you for your kind attention and God bless

7-10-2009

Inauguration Ceremony of SU and Prefects

5 th October, 2009

Good morning Father Li, Teachers and Students,

First of all, I would like to thank Mr. Tsang Fai Cheung, the Chairman of the Student Executive Council, Mr. Cheung Lim On, the Chairman of the Student Representative Council, and their committee members of the SEC and SRC, and also Mr. Chan Wang Leong, the Head Prefect, and all the Prefects for their dedicated service to the school last year. I would also like to congratulate the new Head Prefect, Mr. Hui Chak Pan, and his partners for having obtained the trust and support from the teachers and students. I have confidence that the new Prefect Team will not only help maintain the good discipline of KTMC but also act as the role models of their fellow schoolmates. I would also like to congratulate the new Chairman Mr. Yeung Wai Tat and his cabinet Phoenix for being elected as the Student Executive Council of KTMC this academic year. I believe, under their leadership, the school lives of all KTMC boys will further be enriched.

I understand that every student here treasures very much the freedom given in KTMC. As the Principal of the school, I would like to remind you once again that freedom doesn』t mean you can do whatever you like with no limits. Please remember the ethics training of Catholic schools, freedom means making choices and shouldering up the corresponding responsibilities of your choices. So, the higher the standard of self-discipline of a person, the more the freedom he may deserve. Dear boys, having been with you for one year, I have found lots of evidences to prove that most of you show a high degree of self-discipline. And it tells us that the freedom education of KTMC is a success. Last year, I suggested that the Head Prefect or Vice Head Prefects could take charge of the school assemblies, help maintain the progress as well as the discipline of the functions. The suggestion was accepted by the Discipline Committee immediately. Since then the Monday Morning Assemblies and the Announcement Sessions of the other four days have been taken charge by either the Head Prefects or the other student leaders. All of us agree that the result is good and all students are cooperative. Dear boys, all these prove that you are of excellent quality and can shoulder up more responsibility both in school and in your future career.

This morning, I would also like to share with you some of my feelings about the election of SEC. In fact, I respect very much the great effort that most of the members of Phoenix have made in order to get the chance to serve the schoolmates. I have confidence that the new SEC will not only take care of the welfare of their fellow schoolmates but also act as a bridge between the school and the students. As mutual support and care is essential to maintain the spirit of our school, each of your voices is significant to maintain the family unity of KTMC.

Last week, during our Sports Days, most of the events progressed as scheduled even under strong wind and heavy rain. We could proudly say that the Sports Days was a great success because no event was cancelled and all participants felt satisfied and happy. The main reason was we had conquered the wind and rain and could finish all the events eventually. Boys, we usually think of escaping instead of facing the challenge or hardship ahead. The experience of the Sports Days once again tells us that if we want to do it, we can surely make it. This is no longer a slogan, but a kind of working attitude we have adopted. For making the success come true, I would like to take this opportunity to extend my heartfelt gratitude to all teachers and supporting staff who have shown their great professionalism in helping the Sports Days proceed against the adverse weather. Without their assistance, the Sports Days would not have been a success. May I invite all of you to give a big hand to our devoted teachers and staff.

Once again, I would like to remind the office-bearers that the success of a Student Council is determined by whether you can motivate and guide your schoolmates with different talents to work with you for the development of the school. It is the every bit of contribution from each individual Maryknoller that will eventually accumulate into a tremendous force to help the school move a big step forward. This is what the school expects you to achieve and is definitely a challenging task for you. Please take the experience we have gained from our Sports Day as an example. If you really work hard to achieve your goal, though the road ahead is tough and full of difficulties, you can still taste the sweetness of the fruit finally. May I wish all members of Phoenix a very fruitful and enjoyable year to come.

Boys, the progress of KTMC needs your contribution and support. Let』s work hand in hand with the SU and Prefects together to bring ourselves a brighter future.

Thank you and God bless.

Opening Speech for the Sports Days

28-9-2009

Good morning Fr. Fung, teachers and boys,

Today and tomorrow are the 37th Sports Days of our school. May God grant us a successful, enjoyable and peaceful 37th Sports Days. With the success of Liu Xiang』s return to the tracks of Shanghai Sports Ground around ten days ago, I am sure most of you felt very excited about his achievement and are proud of his endurance through the crisis that he has encountered since the Olympic Games in August, 2008. I would like to take this opportunity to share with you my reflections from the incident.

Liu was at the peak of his career when he participated in the Olympics last year. Unfortunately, his foot injury had broken his dream of shining in front of his Chinese fellows on the motherland. Under the pressure of the high expectations of not only the Chinese population but also the whole world, it would definitely be an extremely difficult decision to make to quit the track just at the start of the event. That experience was exactly a nightmare to Liu! We believe that his success in the sports sector is attributed to his diligence and commitment to the career that he has chosen. His failure is not due to his fault but his destiny or fate in life. Facing such uncontrollable situation, most people would have totally given up and would never stand on their feet again. However, Liu has determinedly said 『No』 to his fate. On the contrary, he is able to tolerate all the criticism against him and has been striving hard towards his goal during the past eighteen months. It is definitely the effort that he has made brings a good restart of his career as shown by his performance in Shanghai in the previous week. No matter whether he is able to resume his supreme global status in the future or not, to me or to us, it is already a great success. Therefore, boys, learning does not only take place within the classroom but also on the sports ground as well. Please remember that knowledge is not the only thing that we have to acquire. It is equally important that we have to adopt a positive attitude towards life. Such attitude is a crucial quality to help you face your ups and downs in the future.

I was deeply impressed to see nearly the whole hall was occupied by the participants of the Sports Days when I attended the briefing session last Friday. Mr. Woo, the PE Master, announced that there were nearly 500 students participating in the events this year, i.e. approximately 100 students more than last year. I can see the improvement as far as the number of participants is concerned. I wish all participants will enjoy the competitions.

In fact, some boys have told me the reason for not joining the athletic events because of the slim chance of winning the game. I hope you understand that the experience of meeting a challenge is more important than winning the medals or trophies. Therefore, I hope those who haven』t joined the Sports Days this year will change their minds next year, so that the aim of 『Sports for All』 can be achieved. God bless

Words from the Principal

1-9-2009

Rev. Joseph Fung, dear teachers and boys,

First, on behalf of all the school members, I would like to extend our warmest welcome to Rev. Joseph Fung, our new Supervisor, and also to Mr. Leung Ka Lun, our new teacher of English and Ethics and Religious Studies.

The academic year of 2008-2009 marked another success of KTMC. Not only because of different trophies and honours you got in different inter-school activities, but also good academic results that our F.7 and F.5 boys achieved in both the A-Level and School Certificate Examinations. In the A-level Examination, 3 boys got 3As or above with the highest score of 4As1B 1C and they are Ng Yan Kin, Tang Ming Kong and Wong Lap Hin. The overall passing rate and credit rate of the A-level Examination are 94% and 33% respectively. For the CE Exam, the F.5 boys have also done a good job as their senior schoolmates. The overall passing rate and credit rate of CEE of our school are 94% and 42% respectively. Five boys got 7As or above with the highest score of 8As1B. They are Chan Hing Kit, Chan Kai Wai, Lam Chi Ho, Wu Ho Fai and Yeung Wai Tat. They are all studying F .6 in our school and I wish they will be generous enough to share with you their methods of getting such remarkable results in public examinations. On behalf of the school, I would like to take this opportunity to thank all our hardworking teachers who have made a great effort and contributed so much time on nurturing our boys. May I invite all of you to give a great round of applause to our devoted teachers.

This year, 2009-2010, marks a very important change in the secondary education of Hong Kong. All of you know that, this is the first year of the implementation of the NSS, New Senior Secondary Education System.

Dear Form Five boys, please always bear in mind the great achievements attained by your senior schoolmates and take them as your role models. I have told you before, your mission, as KTMC boys today, is to break their records and write a new page for the school history, because all of you have the same sound academic foundation as your senior schoolmates. All of you are within the top 33% of the students of the same age. So, doubtless to say, getting at least 14 points in HKCEE is surely within your competence. So, boys, the reputation of our school cannot only rely on the top boys of each form, but with the joint effort of each and everyone of you.If you do try your best, I am sure our school can achieve even higher academic performance in the coming year. And the most important point you have to remind yourselves frequently is, the CEE which you will sit next year, is the last HKCEE which can lead you to universities after attending the matriculation course.

For the Form Four students or below, you have to prepare yourselves for taking the new HKDSE, Hong Kong Diploma of Secondary Education, which is actually new to everybody in terms of curriculum, teaching, learning and assessments as well.

In order to face the changes lying ahead and help you perform better, the school has renovated some parts of the school campus to provide you a better learning environment. The most significant change is that we have converted one of our biology laboratories to 2 classrooms. With this renovation, all our 31 classes will have their own homerooms and there will be no floating class any more. Furthermore, the school has also modified some school policies and measures in order to help you develop better studying habits and also a gentler and smarter appearance.

For marching to success, I highlighted the importance of goal-setting to you last year. Do you still remember the SMART approach - Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic and Time-bound? This year, I would like to take the Athletics Team as an example for further elaboration. In March 2009, I had attended the 3 rd day competition of the Inter-school Athletics Championship. In that competition, our school team was the leading team on the 1 st day and 2 nd day events. AT the end of the 3 rd day competition, when the M.C. announced that our school got only the overall fourth of the competition, all our athletes were very disappointed and some even cried. It was because they had been expecting that they would either be the 2 nd or even the champion of the competition. During the debriefing session, I told them we did try our best, we lost the championship just because the athletes of the other schools performed better. And if we really wanted to get the championship in the coming year, we should have better planning. Firstly, we had to recruit sufficient team members and each team member had to choose 1 or 2 events for special training. Secondly, every team member should set an attainable goal for himself and tried to achieve the goal by taking continuous training and participating in different competitions. If every team member had tried his best to attain his target, the ultimate goal we had set could also be achieved at the same time. In case we were not able to be upgraded to Division 2 in the coming year, it would still be a success for us when each individual target had been attained.

Dear boys, goal setting does not only apply to activities, but also your studies or other areas. So boys, I wish all of you can set your own goals, both for your studies and activities, at the beginning of the school year. If you work hard towards your goals, I am sure you will enjoy the fruit of success at the end of the school year.

Besides studies and activities, this year, the school would like to remind all KTMC boys to pay more attention to our School Motto, with the first focus on 『Kindness』. With this in mind, our school has chosen 『Let us be concerned for one another, to help one another to show love and to do good.[Hebrews 10:24] (我們應該彼此關懷,激發愛德,勉勵行善。〈 希伯來書 10:24 〉 ) 』 as the School Theme of this year. We firmly believe that if you really actualize kindness in your daily lives, with the help of your knowledge and skills, you can surely deserve a greater success in your life.

Dear boys, the road in front of us is long and tough, but I firmly believe, with the guidance of God and our concerted effort, all of us can further develop morally, physically and academically. May I wish you all another very enjoyable and fruitful year.

May God bless you all. Thank you.
