Speech from Principal 2019-2020

Principal's Speech on 2-9-2019

Good morning, Supervisor, teachers and fellow students!

It is great to meet all of you again after a long holiday break. This year is definitely a challenging year for all of us especially having an important political issue that causes a lot of attention of people of HK in the past 3 months and I hope that you will not be too seriously affected and be psychologically prepared to face other challenges lying ahead of us this year.

At the beginning of the school year, I should welcome on behalf of the whole school the new members of the teaching staff. This year we have altogether 7 new teachers and two new social workers; four of them are English Language teachers and these include Ms. Sy Chun May, Ms. Ng Kit Har, Ms. Yeung Pui Wah, and Ms. Wong Wai Ching. We also have Mr. Lam Chi Wa as our New Chinese Language teacher, Ms. Lai Sin Yu, as our new Viusal Arts teacher and Mr. Ho Chun Pong as our new PE teacher. Besides, we have two new social workers serving our school this year. They are Ms. Lena Tong and Mr. Woody Yeung. Let's give a round of applause to welcome them.

There are also new appointments at the Middle Management Level. Mr. Chow Wui Yan is appointed as the Section Head of the Civic Education Section. Mr. Lai Gee Choi is appointed as the Head of the General Academic Affairs Committee. Ms. Leung Ka Yiu and Mr. Yeun Kwn Wing are appointed as the panel head of the English Language department and the Physical Education department respectively. Ms. Chow Yuk Fung is appointed as the SEN Supporting teacher. I believe that the school will continue to develop under the new leadership with the collaboration of different stakeholders of the school.

Let's talk about the performance of the F.6 cohort in 2019 HKDSE exam. We should be happy with the performance of this year as we have 6E To Cheuk Yin managed to get L5** in 7 subjects and became one of the top scorers of the HKDSE this year. He was admitted into the programme of the Bachelor of Dental Surgery of HKU. Cheuk Yin is a student from a grass-root family who did not join any private tutorial lessons and he is able to attain a good result under the guidance of our teachers. I believe you can also attain good academic result as Cheuk Yin if you can be very attentive in class; be able to take notes over the key points mentioned in class and also be able to spend time to work on quality problems after school. Let’s work hard together so that we can have another top scorers of the HKDSE in the near future. The overall result of this year showed improvement in the % of students obtaining the minimum requirement for university entry that increases from 73.1% to 80.3%. However, the % of students with L5 or above was only 15.5% which is lower than that of last year i.e. 19.7%. 82 students out of 117, i.e. 70% of F6 students got an offer of the degree programmes in JUPAS. Among these students, 54 students, (46.1%) of them got a degree offer from the 8 UGC-funded local universities and 21 of them got an offer from HKU, CUHK and HKUST. It is observed that if a F.6 student can manage to have 20 points or above in his best five subjects then it is quite certain that he can secure a UGC funded degree programme offered by the 8 local universities. May I appeal to all F.6 students to try your very best to prepare for the HKDSE exams. You should take the initiatives to work on suitable exercises and past paper questions. You should also form study groups among yourselves to do revision after school so as to equip yourselves with a thorough understanding of the topics and hopefully most of you will be able to receive offers from local universities.

Let's talk about the school development plan for this year. We are in the second year of a development cycle in the School Development Plan (2018-2021) and hence we have the same major concerns as that of last year and they are:-

(a) To enhance students' ownership in learning so that they can stretch their learning potential to the fullest and (b) To cultivate in students the five core values of Catholic education, aligned with the school spirits, so that they can have a positive attitude towards life.

To assist you to surpass yourselves academically, teachers would pay more attention to giving quality written or oral feedback to show you the proper way for further improvement. Please pay attention to the feedback provided and work seriously according to the direction suggested so as to excel your own potential. Besides achieving a better result to surpass yourself academically, we also hope that every student will gain a better understanding of the five core values of Catholic education which include, Life, Truth, Justice, Family and Love. This year we will put our emphasis to provide opportunities for you to have a better encounter about the meaning of Family and Life. Remember that life is a precious gift from heaven and each one of you is unique and equipped with different god-gifted talents. Family is the basic unit of the society and it is also where life is cultivated. Besides, more interclass activities will be organized so as to allow chances for you to work with your classmates like family members and that helps shape your class a second home for everyone. This will also echo with the school theme of this year that “Each one, as a good manager of God's different gifts, must use for the good of others the special gift he has received from God.” (1 Peter 4:10). Hence, please try to be a contributive member of your class with the god-gifted talents.

Incidents happened over the last two months were really a big challenge for everyone, especially the young generation of Hong Kong. The prolonged demonstrations and political disputes had definitely disturbed the normal life of everyone and it is not uncommon to see people suffering from emotional problems such as anxiety, frustration, anger or even depression. We are very much concern about your mental health and we care so much about ways that we can provide to accompany you to cope with this difficult period in your life. Please do not hesitate to contact any teachers or social workers when you come across any emotional problems and we are all willing to offer our helping hands. School should be a place which is safe and secure for learning and character formation of students and it should not be used as means to settle political disputes. Remember the famous quote of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. I had stated in my speech during the closing ceremony of last school year that “Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only Light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only Love can do that”. Violence cannot end violence, instead it will bring out more violence and only genuine dialogue will be able to end that. Knowing that the theme of this year Education Sunday is to become a peacemaker of god, I would like to end my speech with the prayer of St. Francis of Assisi,

“Lord, make me an instrument of your peace;

where there is hatred, let me sow love;

where there is injury, pardon;

where there is doubt, faith;

where there is despair, hope;

where there is darkness, light;

where there is sadness, joy;

O divine Master, grant that I may not so much seek

to be consoled as to console,

to be understood as to understand,

to be loved as to love.

For it is in giving that we receive,

it is in pardoning that we are pardoned,

it is in dying that we are born to eternal life. Amen.”

May the peace of the Lord be with you and your family throughout this academic year and we will all try our very best to be the peacemaker that brings peaceful life back to everyone.

Thank you and God bless.
